Every video I’ve seen of Daniel Ho, or anyone, playing this song, they’re in the key of G. But the recording(s) I have of it, (from his “Ukulele Classics & Originals” album, as well as the version on “Ledgends of the Ukulele-Hawaiian Masters” various artist CD), are in the key of F, which is how the Dominator uke tab hosted on this site has it tabbed out and notated. Is it possible he recorded this song tuned a whole step down to Bb…?
Hello Mike,
I’m sure that Brad will have more helpful information than I, but in this video, (which I’m sure you’ve seen) Daniel does seem to be playing it in G.
Yes, I’ve seen that one as well. His instruction book(s) also have it written out in the key of G, as does Brad’s instructional video of this song. Just wondering if tuning a step below normal C6 tuning is a thing. The more I listen to the recordings, and all the open string/pull off licks, the more it sounds as if he’s playing out of a G shape rather than the first position F shape. Maybe because so many of Daniel Ho’s compositions work out of the G shape, he wanted the song in a different key.(?) Dominator’s tab is very accurate though, so it’s been a great starting point. Guess I’ll have to get yet another uke to keep in Bb… darn it anyway.
A good possibility. I just tried it both ways and feel like the lower string tension is probably a part of the sound on the Legends recording.
The difference between F and G from a shapes perspective in GCEA - especially with low-G - isn’t that big so I think that’s why it’s easy to be fooled into thinking he played it in standard.
Impossible to know without his input, but my vote is Bb6.
Definitely get another uke for Bb6!
